New security team for 2014 Pow Wow ensures fun, safety

ALBUQUERQUE (KASA) – The Gathering of Nations Pow Wow will get underway on Thursday night and it is touted as the second largest event in the State of New Mexico. The event doesn’t just gather Native American tribes from around the world, it also gathers thousands of spectators making it a major security undertaking.

“One of our top priorities is to ensure that people get into the venue safe,” says Alex Garcia with JLS Security.

While spectators enjoy themselves, the security teams are not only responsible for people getting into and out of University Arena in an orderly fashion, they need to make sure they’re safe while they’re there.

“EMS personnel are going to be on site and our first level of security for emergency situations is to use the chain of command at the local level,” adds Garcia. “They’ll just relay the message and we’ll have emergency personnel respond in accordance.”

The security team responsibilities still don’t end at monitoring safety, they’re the best resource to helping people navigate their way through vendors and entertainment.

“We’ve always found it important because we turn into public information folks and so we’re not just providing security, we’re providing public information for everybody who comes in,” says Garcia.

All the events for the Pow Wow kick off on Thursday night with the Miss Indian World Pageant at the Albuquerque Convention Center. There will likely be a lot of people on hand for that event as well so the best advice is to get to there early.
