I made a reservation through the hotel's website. Afterward, I was told I had to complete a pre-arrival checklist. Uploading identification was a bit of a hassle, but fine, hotels check ID anyway. Then they required me to upload a facial recognition video of myself. That's where it became a problem.
I didn't have a way to readily do this, and I also emailed them to request their privacy policy, which wasn't available anywhere in the process. As I suspected, the policy gave them nearly unlimited rights to the video, including the right to share and sell it to third-party "partners" for their own use. In today's AI age, a company with rights to your video can do real damage: impersonations, deepfakes, and who knows what else.
Requiring guests to sign away rights to their own image just to book a room, without disclosing it before purchase, is a terrible bait-and-switch. When I asked if I could send a photo instead, they said no; only a video, with exclusive rights granted to them, would do.
