9/10 Excellent
A Jewell in Lower Manhattan
Likes: Situated in a mixed use, art deco building, Mint House is not your typical hotel. There are great facilities like a coffee shop, fresh food supermarket, laundromat, gym, etc.
The rooms give off an apartment vibe, making one instantly feel at home. I booked a small studio which was pleasantly spacious, with a nice, comfortable bed, fridge, a selection of beverages, crockery, etc. The vinyl record player is a lovely touch and you can pick up a selection of vinyls from reception to take back to your room.
The front desk staff are helpful & friendly.
The hotel is keyless. Meaning you’re given a code to operate the elevators & access your room.
Getting around is relatively easy: Located in the heart of the Financial District, Mint House is a short walk from many attractions like Wall Street, 9/11 Memorial & Trinity Church. There are also a number of Metro stations close by as well as a ferry port less than 10 minutes walk away. I boarded the ferry from Wall Street Pier for a quick trip to Brooklyn.
Dislikes: 1. While the code access system is a good feature, it does get awkward when you’re in an elevator with strangers & you don’t want them to see the code you’re entering, because anyone with your code could potentially open your door.
2. Before arriving, I contacted the front desk to ask for the best way to get to Mint House from JFK. The person I spoke with advised that my best option was for them to book me a taxi for $135 as Uber would most likely charge me more. I wish I hadn’t believed this. It turns out that there are a flurry of yellow cabs at JFK and they’ll take you anywhere in the city for a flat fee of $70!!!! Needless to say, I felt scammed, so it did put a dampener on my arrival.
