8/10 Very good
Very comfortable room, friendly staff, great location.
I was in New York City Saturday, February 9th, 2019 for a Lunar New Year's party. Inasmuch as February is often quite cold in the city, I Googled lodging near the restaurant where the party was to be held. I've done this before. My brother has thrown this party each year for forty years. It is important to me to have a place to rest after the festivities. This year I tried the Sago and was very pleased. It was a block away from where the party was to be held. After checking in, I walked around the area. This is the Lower East Side. The Sago is across the street from an important destination: The Tenement Museum. There is much history in this part of the city. The museum itself draws people from all over the world, as does Russ and Daughters Cafe. There is a fantastic LGBT bookshop a few doors down, many places for food and drink. It is a lively area for tourists and city folk alike. The Sago is a boutique hotel, no higher than five floors, I believe. I asked if I could visit the rooftop patio, and the man at the desk said yes. He showed me the elevator and up I went. I sat in the sitting room near the glass doors leading to the patio, poured myself a hot tea and slid a door. There are two patios, facing different directions. I explored both of them and enjoyed the pristine, sunny, winter breeze, observing the water towers any fan of the New York skyline seeks. My room was on the second floor. I went down there and rested up in anticipation of the New year's party. I fell asleep almost instantly. It's a good place to sleep. I felt like a king in a Dr. Seuss story, sinking into dreamland on a massive comfortable bed. The room was warm and, unlike almost any hotel room I've stayed in, it was steady in its warmth for my entire stay. Returning later that night from the party, the clerk let me in. When I checked out the next day I had a backpack on and the clerk asked me, without my prompting, if I'd like to leave it with the hotel for a few hours after checking out. I thanked him and said that was all right, but what impressed me was the offer. A guest, checking out, is still important to the Sago, and they realize that most guests don't leave the city right away after check-out. I will recommend the Sago to anyone visiting New York and will I will visit it again.
