I booked a two-night stay at Kasa Chicago River North after reading the raving reviews. However, my experience failed my expectation wildly.
After we settled in our room, it was immediately noticed that the wired-in smoke detector in the bedroom was making quite an unpleasant buzzing sound constantly while issuing even higher-pitched sounds intermittently. We called their customer service number right away (and the reason we could not find anyone on-site to help is that Kasa, rather than a stand-alone hotel, borrows and then rents out part of the building to visitors, which means that it is not operating fully in a standard hotel manner. The only person physically present for Kasa was a front-desk gentleman who appears sometimes each afternoon), and after two unanswered phone calls, someone called back and said they had taken in our concern and would dispatch someone to be there right away.
And you've probably guessed it -- no one showed up all night, leaving us waiting from almost 7pm to 11pm, when we, too tired to call in and file another complaint, eventually fell to sleep. In the middle of the night, my wife and I both woke up on separate occasions, and the loud humming sound was still distinctively present. When the morning came, I made another call, and this time, finally, after another three hours, a man in charge of the building maintenance showed up around noon. With one cursory look, his heels turned toward the door: according to him, the smoke detector in the bedroom was set in place and operated by Kasa, so he could not do anything about it. (Another potential issue here that we did not pay much attention to -- and so could not address in this review -- is that there is another similar smoke detector in the living room, and we had no idea how loud that one could get.)
And that concluded our struggle to get a good night's sleep. However, although our journey to Chicago was painted dark by this tiny detail, I must say that in fairness, everything else, including the front desk gentleman's hospitality, the easily-accessible and attached parking lot, and the room's downtown location was either convenient or pleasant.
